Which gas companies in Christchurch service Rolleston and Darfield?

LPG4U and KiwiGas both offer deliveries in Rolleston and Darfield.

What is bottled gas called and what's in it?

Bottled gas is (most commonly) another name for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), which is a mixture of propane and butane gases. Propane makes more heat than butane when you burn it, which means the mix of gases in LPG can be tweaked to suit the climate you're in. While a mix that contains more butane than usual is popular for home use in warmer climates, here in Canterbury we need a gas that puts out a little more heat. That's why the LPG4U mix contains slightly more propane than usual.

What is bottled LPG used for?

LPG is suitable for home heating, gas fires, gas cookers, barbecues, patio heaters, and water heating. One great thing about using LPG4U gas for your hot water is that it heats instantly, so there’s no waiting for the water to heat on a cold morning, or when you’re last in line for the shower. Plus you only pay to heat the water you use.

What options are there for bottled gas?

LPG4U makes regular runs to deliver 9kg and 45kg bottles. Where a steep driveway makes access difficult we can deliver 18kg or 27kg bottles. If you need help to decide what bottle size is right for you please contact us.

Gas bottle comparison - 45kg and 9kg

Compared to a 9kg cylinder, a 45kg cylinder is five times the size so it will last a lot longer. If your appliance draws a lot of gas, the smaller 9kg bottles also have a slight risk of ‘icing up’ on cold Canterbury mornings. The higher volume of LPG4U's 45kg bottles means less risk of icing, which makes these bigger bottles the best option for heating your home.

How do I know when my bottle is empty?

LPG4U top tip: The best way to check if your gas bottle is nearly empty is to fill a jug with warm water and pour it down the side of your bottle. Feel down the side where you have poured the water and it will be cold where the gas level is. If you're used to rocking your LPG cylinder from side to side to check gas levels, we suggest you use this method instead. Rocking the cylinder is not an accurate way to check its gas level.
